Conditions Treated

If you need an adult psychiatrist in Arizona, this page offers a clear list of conditions treated by Dr. Lisa Goldman—and situations where I’m not the right fit. I practice safety-first, psychotherapy-informed psychiatry. I’m here to listen, and I’m here to offer practical suggestions that lead to helpful change.

These are in addition to my three primary client types: burnt out healthcare professionals, neurodivergent (ADHD) adults, and members of the LQBTQ community.

adult psychiatrist conditions treated (Arizona)

Here are a list of types of people/conditions treated:

  • Depression, as in major depression, dysthymia and cyclothymia, “unspecified mood disorder”
  • Bipolar disorder types I, II and variants of these
  • Post-partum depression
  • Insomnia
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic attacks
  • Specific phobias – like public speaking, doctor visits, dentist etc
  • Situational stressors: evil employers, bad bosses, relocated to a new town
  • Strategic dating and partner selection,
  • Career decisions, break-ups, divorce,
  • Adjusting to illness or death of a loved one
  • Scaling down for simplicity and freedom
  • Coping with intrusive, unpredictable or selfish parents,
  • Managing caregiver concerns, offering healthy support without losing your mind
  • Overthinking or ruminating – often this is an area of overlap between anxiety, depression and insomnia
  • People who want the expertise of an experienced well trained, humanistic psychiatrist but are still able to accept responsibility for running their own lives
  • People who can fill out forms on a computer and have access to WiFi where they can spend most of an hour in privacy for scheduled visits

Note: I practice safety first psychiatry. Many of these conditions require you to have established an ongoing relationship with a primary care provider who can do physical exams and lab testing to rule out specific reversible medical illnesses posing as psychiatric illnesses, and / or occasional blood testing to monitor medication safety.

Conditions / folks I do NOT treat:

  • Medical weight loss
  • Eating Disorders – I’m a fat friendly provider who is open to folks on a weight loss journey but it’s not my main focus
  • Active substance abuse in the high risk range – recent DUI’s, blackouts, etc
  • Pain management (not a psychiatry issue, needs a pain specialist)
  • Ongoing benzodiazepine (Xanax, Valium etc), prescribing needs
  • Psychosis (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
  • Delusions (believing things that are definitely not true despite ample evidence to the contrary)
  • Any court ordered treatment
  • Any patient who is coerced into treatment by another person or entity
  • People under age 18
  • People who are unhappy being gay and wish to become straight – I don’t believe in this. Being gay is not a mental disorder
  • Social security disability evaluation as a chief complaint, this is for long term, well-established patients only
  • Persons with history of frequent active suicidal thinking or recent suicide attempts as this situation calls for a full service 24-hour mental health team
  • People who want to be told what to do, bossed around or treated as if they are a child who cannot make their own decisions
  • People who are unable to/ unwilling to use basic computer technology for virtual psychiatry visits, such as email with portal link to click on, a computer with a camera and microphone, or FaceTime calls if that’s easier
